common sense rules

Everyone should act civil, mature, and respectful toward one another.
You may under no circumstance fight with, belittle, troll, provoke, or insult another member, whether they’re old members, new members, or staff. On this note, sarcasm should be used with due caution.

Plagiarism is a bannable offense.
S*T will not tolerate people who steal other people's artwork, music, writing, or ideas. If you have source materials or inspirations that seem to "copy" another persons work--please give credit where it is due. Take pride in your own work, not in somebody elses.

We require acceptable grammar, spelling, and punctuation from all of our members at all times.
“Acceptable" means that errors and typos are okay but only to a point. If you never proof read your posts, use shorthand or 1337, or if you type in any way that makes your writing difficult to comprehend, you will be consulted. We are a writing community, and it should show throughout the board.

Always, always, always save your work!
Whether finished or in progress, we consider it vital that you remember to save all of your role plays, character profiles, and/or anything else you’ve worked hard on. We do everything in our power to keep S*T bug-free and happy, but problems can happen, and if they do, we want you to be prepared! In a couple of years you’ll be glad you have the ability to look back on everything!!

out of character forum rules

Non-RP sections of S*T are rated "PG-13" by default.
Damn, hell, crap, shit, bitch, and ass are allowed anywhere; however, NO OTHER profane words are permitted around S*T. The only exceptions to this rule are the Philosophy of Philistines board and all role playing forums. (These are both exempt completely). This includes the limitation of adult themed content.

You can rate topics/replies that have a unsuitable content.
The forums are PG-13 by default, but if you want to talk about more adult content in the OOC forums, please rate your topic like you would in the role play forums. Also, if you post a reply to a topic that breaks the PG-13 rule, put in the RE: the rating of your post. We'll sway the PG-13 rule within reason if you rate a topic/reply.

Advertising is not allowed.
S*T is not a billboard for your use, so we ask that any and all advertising be minimal and kept either to profiles or signatures. Also, for obvious reasons, the advertising of any role play-based websites is not permitted at all.

Double posting is discouraged.
Surreal*Twilight is a slower message board than some others, and there is no reason to "bump" a thread with a double post every couple of minutes. Use the edit button as often as possible. Some forums have specific rules on double posting, so please be sure to read the stickies.

Spam is not allowed anywhere aside from the Chaotic*Dawn forum.
We consider "spam" to include one-liner posts, single-image/emoticon posts, or just generally any post that doesn't seriously pertain to the topic at hand. The Chaotic*Dawn forum is there for all your nonsensical needs, so keep anything resembling spam to there. If you start a topic outside of Chaotic*Dawn and you believe someone is spamming it, contact staff to handle the issue.

Signature images must be no larger than 500 x 150 pixels.
You’re allowed as many individual images as you like, so long as their combined size is less than or equal to the restriction. If your signature is slowing down a page for even a single user, we have the right to ask you to remove the signature. Some images, like remembrance banners and pet GIFs, may break this limit but within reason. We have a two-strike rule with signatures; first time is a warning, second time you lose it for good!

students' out of character forum rules

PG-13 rating ONLY in a welcome thread, even if the individual post is marked with a rating.
A member shouldn't have to come to a forum that already has a specified rating and receive responses that are above that rating. There should be no need to re-rate a welcome thread because of comments posted by other members. Be respectful and appropriate when welcoming new members.

Student Out of Character forums are meant to be passed through, not stayed in
Discussion in Introductions & Welcomes should be kept to just that--introducing and welcoming. Welcome topics can diverge to general discussion, but new topics should not have the same content as that found in Graduate OOC. The topic will be locked.

chatbox rules

Everyone should act civil, mature, and respectful toward one another
You may under no circumstance fight with, belittle, troll, provoke, or insult another member, whether they’re old members, new members, or staff. There should absolutely be no talking behind people's backs if it's in a derogatory manner! All sarcasm should be used with due caution.

S*T Chatbox is rated PG-13 by default and THAT'S IT
Damn, hell, crap, shit, bitch, and ass are allowed; however, NO OTHER profane words are permitted. This includes the limitation of adult themed content.

Advertising is not allowed
S*T is not a billboard for your use, so we ask that any and all advertising be minimal and kept to either to profiles or signatures. Also, for obvious reasons, the advertising of any role play-based websites is not permitted at all.

Images should be left for the forums
Posting images in the chatbox can get annoying and may slow down the site for other members. Keep pictures to regular topics in OOC.

Got something to say? Keep it to the Ideas, Tweaks & Praise Forum
Discussing issues that you have with the forum should be reserved to topics ONLY. Everybody's opinions matter, but they will not be heard OR dealt with effectively if they are posted in the chatbox.

private message rules

Warnings for PMs can and will be distributed when the either of the party complains of harassment, spam, advertising, threats, etc. Usernames involved and PM history must be saved in full and presented to a member of the administration.

Harassing PMs: If you tell someone to stop PMing you (in a mature fashion), and they PM you more than once after said PM regarding the same or similar topic, the offending user can be warned.

Advertising/Spam PMs: Will result in an instant warn, unless the receiving user has specifically requested for it. It's not allowed on the site, it's not allowed in PMs.

Spamming members to RP: If the member that receives the PM declines the first request but keeps getting requests to join the same RP, this can be considered harassment and will be issued a warning.

PMs that are directed to users to be considered pure threats/harassment: This will result in a warning. If the member account was created for this sole purpose--the account will be perma-banned.

PM chains that have been instigated by the party that is asking for assistance and have resulted in one or more of the previous situations will be ignored.

These warnings will also result depending on each situation. It is very hard to pin point an exact rule for this type of offense as it is unique to its situation. Only those situations that are brought to our attention will be dealt with.

fyi

All S*T staff are allowed and expected to uphold the rules. However, we will try our best to work things out with you if you do happen to break a rule before we issue any sort of warning or punishment.
